4/6/20 Registration for SWNMSEC has officially reopened. Registration will close May 1, and all paperwork is required by May 8. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

3/27/20 Today, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham executively ordered all public schools to remain closed for the remainder of the 2019 – 2020 academic year. In response, SWNMSEC will be serving our five counties by reopening registration (free) and providing resources and mentorship for teachers and students who still wish to participate in the virtual fair. More information will be available soon, through the website, so please check back frequently.

3/26/20 As of today, both the New Mexico State Science Fair and the International Science and Engineering Fair have been canceled, however, SWNMSEC is still going to be held virtually. We are waiting for schools to resume to release more details. Please continue looking toward the website for additional information.

3/18/20 SWNMSEC has been closely monitoring the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) outbreak. We are preparing to move the regional fair virtual. At this time, we plan to require all projects to be submitted digitally through the registration software. Submitted photos of your board, abstract and paperwork will be reviewed by our judges. The top-scored projects will be selected and notified to set up an interview time. More information will be released on March 30th.
***Refunds for registration fees will be issued. Please be patient as we navigate the NMSU accounting system to do so.

03/13/20 Yesterday New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced that all NM public schools will be closed for the next three weeks beginning Monday. In response to this announcement, SWNMSEC has been postponed until April. Additional information will be available soon.

03/11/20  Today New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham declared a public health emergency in response to the COVID-19 Coronavirus and encouraged New Mexicans to avoid large gatherings and events to help limit community spread. In response to and with guidance from the NM PED, the 2020 Southwest New Mexico Science and Engineering Challenge has been moved to a virtual competition. We will be meeting tomorrow afternoon to finalize the schedule for the virtual competition and will distribute more information then.

If you have internet issues that may impact your ability to participate in a virtual competition, please contact me directly.

I know this news is very disappointing as you have all have worked very hard to prepare for the challenge. However, our responsibility to ensure the health and safety of students, staff, volunteers, and the larger community remains at the forefront of this decision.

We remain dedicated to SWNMSEC and providing this opportunity for students to excel. Please watch your emails and the website for more information to be sent out shortly.
